Khun Sa was never so much defeated as squeezed out, and not too far from his comfort zone although he probably missed the hills during the sticky Rangoon summers. This occurred after a rival army to the north called the United Wa State Army(UWSA) eclipsed the Mong Tai Army(MTA) with support from the Burmese Government while certain internal problems relating to the command structure in the MTA cued Khun Sa and many others to exeunt after a mutiny precipitated by a senior Shan commander, now Gen. Yawd Serk of the Shan State Army- South (SSA-S). They had held out against the ceasefire agreement until very recently and still have problems with the Burmese Army continuing to harass the SSA-S.
