Samson and Delilah (2009)

Samson and Delilah is set in a tiny, remote outback settlement with a few houses and a store. He is a teenager living with his brothers in a house where the only thing to do is play reggae on the verandah. When the boy picks up the guitar he is chased away. She is the grand daughter of a woman who does tribal paintings for sale to tourists at the store. These paintings and the reggae constitute their cultural environment and entertainment except for the petrol, glue, or thinners he is breathing from a convenient receptacle most of the time. Both feel out of place there and steal a communal car to escape to the town nearby where they stay under the bridge with a drunk who provides most of the dialogue in the film before he goes to stay with christians for the meals. It is a truly captivating film done in a style which reflects well the isolation and stark hardship of life in the outback for disowned children of dispossessed parents either in the bush with its isolation or in the town with its inherent dangers. In the end they go back to the girl's country where they live together under Christ if not married, truly desolate but the violence and chroming are gone. I found this with a five star rating from ABC At the Movies Revues and endorse the rating. An oblique reference for here, the promo t's and caps the film is called S4D.
