Site Feedback

Well I finally got around to using this site (maybe site should be on the list of usage. Bah ha). Here are some things I have noticed that could be improved:

The date is in US format (ie mm/dd/yyyy). Is it possible to change it to AU or UK format?

All usage pie chart and table should not be displayed unless user logs in to site. It is sensitive information and shouldn't be displayed to any Jo Blow stumbling onto the site.

When you go to My Usage data the table shows all users. That is fine as the default setting but when looking at your own data the table should only display your details. The pie chart is fine for a graphical representation of you usage but the table shows details you would be interested in seeing for your own usage.

That's about it so far.

I've been using all this morph and had to list it as Heroin as the nearest thing to its name on 'Select a Drug' so i put the details in 'notes' just as i do with Benzo Family and Valium. For me that's a suitable convention but it isn't consistent across 'All Users'.
What's the dif between Au or UK date format?

Perhaps different opiates could be listed on the usage data entry section, but be all included in 'opiates/heroin' on the pie chart??

I am just finishing off some timeline charts, next job was to boost teh Usage data entry form, so i could throw in some sub-categories once u choose opiates...

opiates you get a drop down menu with all the popular and not so popular opiates, the same as when you choose speed a menu including methedrine, ice, dexedrine, benzedrine, amphetamine, ephedrine. Coke with hydrochloride (powder0, free base (crack), and pharmaceutical. Benzos could be a sub-category in 'Downers' along with barbiturates and NBSH(Non Barbiturate Sedative Hypnotics) like Mandrax and dodos. Dissociatives include ketamine, nitrous oxide and angel dust(PCP). Hallucinogens include psilocybin (mushrooms), MDA(ekky), DMT, LSD, mescaline...Alcohol includes beer, spirits, wine. Solvents include petrol, glue, thinners. Cannabis includes kiff, buds, hash, oil.

which seems excessive for a tracker but if a user wants to track a drug they should be able to find it here as long as it is easy to navigate. Drugs forum.com has a good model for how to find your way around it and once you find the name of the drug you are tracking in this list it should be easy to find it on the tracker list or add it. Even this list is inadequate for our needs; Proladone and Endone are not mentioned with oxycodone, nor is Paracodin with hydrocodone under 'Opioids', nor is oxazepam with Serepax under 'Benzodiazepines', nor is cane toad or Bufo Marinus mentioned under 'Psychadelic Animals', nor is gold top or Psilocybe Cubensis nor blue meanies or Psilocybe Cyanescens under 'Psychoactive Fungi' so there will always be a need for improvement.

dates are the bane of anyone who has worked with databases at one time or another. US format is mm/dd/yy, UK/AUS format is dd/mm/yy. You'll notice that all dates are in UK/Aus format everywhere except the track usage form. This form itself needs work, it's not attractive, ...having said that, I'll pop into the settings for the forms and see if we can choose a date format.

Sayarsan's comment about not being able to select specific drugs like Morph and and Valium is a valid point. Maybe the Benzo drug group should be re-named "Benzo Other" and the most popular Benzos having names of their own. The specific Benzos would be Diazepam, Oxazepam and Alprazolam, maybe followed with their popular brand name in brackets (not the other way around as we don't want to be promoting major pharmaceutical companies).

Benzodiazanes are a definite group. I don't think it really matters if it is Valium or Xanax, despite their differences.... there is plenty of space for people to keep their own records if they think it matters. I agree with Felix's (cringe using that F name!), chemical company comment!!
That said,
If anything, perhaps a distinguishable category for alprazolam (Xanax)?... as it is the most different to the general ; diazepam, oxazepam, temazepam, nitrazepam group.... sorta like fluronitrazepam (Rohypnol) is sorta in a class of it's own... especially if someone is actually using alprazolam powder, rather than Xanax pills!

Displaying usage statistics by percentage is a difficult thing to achieve with any meaningful accuracy. I assume the current method of displaying these stats is by dosage. This can be very misleading. The most obvious way to benchmark dosage usage is by comparing apples with apples and not just using the single figure in the dosage field but also working out what Unit of Measure (UOM) the dosage is referring to. For example one could add one use by using 0.033 gm but one could also add the same dose by specifying 33 mg, but I assume the usage graphs are not considering the UOM just the dose figure on its own. After all how would you compare grams with pills or lines (all three seem to be UOM options in this usage system) it’s like asking how many grams are in yellow. I would strongly recommend removing the abstract UOMs such as lines and pills and stick strictly with meaningful weights. After all a user should be able to work out how many mg are in a pill or a line.

I suppose it would be very difficult to only refer to weights by excluding the measurement of liquids (eg Litres), after all alcohol is measured in litres or millilitres. I suppose one way of converting the metaphorical apple to an orange is by using the standard conversion of the weight of water; i.e. 1 x Litre = 1 KG at sea level (I believe there is temperature to consider too but we can make certain assumptions here). I believe alcohol can be measured in the weight of ethanol, I don’t have the actual method here but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_by_volume does cover the subject. If we can convert all drugs into a weight based UOM we can certainly make a more accurate comparison between the drugs.

I am of course assuming here that the graphs Felix has set up on this site can take UOM into consideration and convert all UOM into a single method (e.g. grams). Is this possible Felix? However even if this was achieved it would still make the comparison of drugs into a single pie graph rather difficult, especially when comparing THC doses with LSD. One you could measure in grams or possibly milligrams when the latter would be measured in micrograms. A lifetime’s usage of LSD would not show up on the graph when compared with other drugs used.

I suppose the other method of measuring and comparing drugs is by dollars. It would certainly bring all the drugs closer into a meaningful measurement, but then one would have to consider the comparison of expensive illicit drugs such as Heroin with very cheap legal drugs such as diazepam; after all a hundred bucks of diazepam is a shit load of diazepam.

In conclusion I suppose there is no way of using a consistent way of comparing these different drugs with the tools currently at hand. You could introduce an additional method of measurement such as “hit factor” or something. But that is a very subjective thing to measure. It would be good if the user has different options when displaying their usage, such as Dollars or Grams or even just dosage figure. So I guess there is no easy answer to this. However I hope my comments here have created some food for thought.

sayarsan's picture

There are lots of ways to compare usage and the more the merrier so long as each is as consistent as possible. Cost is a good comparison but goes awry when you shift from PBS diazepam at some cents for 5mg to off the street diazepam at up to $5 for the same or more if the buyer is an addict going into withdrawals on payday. This we are stuck with and the 'Notes' box is the best place or only place to deal with that.
The UOM could be reduced to a single type for each drug but across drugs the problem mentioned by Lemonfresh comparing LCD to pot comes up and even within one drug group, benzos f'rinstance comparing valium with rohypnol. I don't see a way around it and considering how sexy graphs can be maybe this is a good thing. It does open up new territory for graphs.
In the 'Select a Value' box perhaps there could be a dropdown menu for each drug group. Speed or Uppers could have a menu with ice, amphetamine, ritalin, ephedrine, etc., Benzos - vallium, serepax, rohys, xanax, etc., and the same goes for opiates, hallucinogens, anaesthetics, even Coke could have street or blackmarket, pharmaceutical, crack (in case we have overseas accounts or some does show up here).

sayarsan's picture

It seems as if the site has reached a point of stagnation. A point of stagnation is not a bad thing as long as it bears some fruit and a stage for reflection can enable a project to proceed with renewed vigour as long as those working on it have the impetus to keep working. Once those who work on the site are devoid of vigour their continued value is questionable but it serves no purpose to discard, as long as someone is interested they may find something to contribute later but this is no reason to sit and wait. With one person providing a skeleton and one providing some flesh we have built on the first site and perhaps we should now be asking ourselves ‘where to from here?’

The idea of making the site public should be predicated on the assumption that there is something the public will be interested in and a usage tracker is something that a drug using public can use, members of that public will eventually recognise this, but initial interest is clearly very low from this sample and there is so much room to improve this feature that the process will go on after the site is public.

Blogs are important to a site like this but these days many drug users, especially those who are illiterate, have no idea at all where to begin so there is a need to demystify ‘blogging’. Since the whole idea of blogging, as far as I can determine, is to develop a ‘collective wisdom’ as opposed to the ‘public wisdom’ afforded by merely gossiping a practical example of ‘collective wisdom’ in action might be a good start around which a dialogue and understanding of blogging might emerge.

There are libraries for reviews of books, movies, and songs and there are many drug users who could contribute here but we have only found two so far, clearly this needs to be encouraged in the public. The news library is the same, perhaps it might be better if news stories weren’t identified with the contributor since there is nothing more abhorrent than a monopoly on news, and the stories I contribute have nothing to do with me unless I add a comment.

As the site develops a skeleton and flesh there becomes a need for clothes. Packaging, it’s all in the packaging and looking mangy will ensure our extinction and must be addressed. Along with packaging comes the issue of links and this must also be addressed.

The popular internet seems to be taking shape right now but I have only been on line for a year and it’s a steep learning curve. Many are already plenty advanced and it seems imperative almost that we find others like this whether from friends or the public.
